Dental Implant Aftercare Guide

Dental implant aftercare

Once your surgery is complete, it is important to follow the postoperative instructions provided by Dr. Borboa Dental Implant Center to protect the treated area and support proper healing.

Avoid Touching the Implant Site

During the early healing period, avoid touching, pressing or disturbing the surgical area, including during brushing.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Continue your oral hygiene routine, but be gentle around the surgical site. A mouth rinse may be recommended when appropriate.

Adjust Your Diet

During the first few days, choose soft, cold or lukewarm foods and avoid chewing directly on the treated side.

Healing and implant integration take time, so follow the dietary instructions provided for your specific procedure.

Avoid Harmful Habits

Smoking and alcohol can interfere with healing and implant integration. Follow the recommendations provided by the treating team during your recovery.

Recommended Diet

If you received IV sedation or general anesthesia, begin with cold or room-temperature liquids. Avoid hot foods or drinks while your mouth is still numb.

During the first hours, options may include:

  • Applesauce
  • Jell-O
  • Pudding
  • Plain yogurt

Once normal sensation returns, soft solid foods may be introduced while chewing away from the surgical area.

Recommended liquids may include:

  • Water
  • Natural juices
  • Crushed ice or ice chips
  • Ice pops

Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is important during recovery. Follow the instructions given for brushing and cleaning around the surgical site.

  • Begin oral care according to the instructions provided
  • Brush carefully with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Avoid disturbing the surgical area
  • Use mouth rinses only as directed

Rest and Physical Activity

Rest during the early recovery period and gradually return to normal activities depending on how you feel and the instructions provided by the clinic.

Healing Process

Changes in the appearance of the surgical area can occur as healing progresses. Temporary changes such as tenderness, swelling or visible healing tissue may occur.

If you are unsure whether something is normal, contact Dr. Borboa Dental Implant Center.

Use of Antibiotics

If antibiotics are prescribed, take them according to the dosage and schedule provided by the treating team.

If you experience a rash or another unusual reaction, contact the clinic immediately.

Bleeding

Mild bleeding may occur after implant surgery. If instructed, place clean damp gauze over the area and apply gentle, constant pressure.

  • Keep your head elevated and rest
  • Replace gauze if necessary
  • Avoid disturbing the surgical site
  • Contact the clinic if bleeding is heavy or persistent

Swelling

Swelling is a common part of healing after oral surgery. Cold compresses may be recommended during the early recovery period, followed later by warm compresses when appropriate.

Contact the clinic if swelling becomes severe, continues to worsen or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

Medication

Some discomfort is expected after oral surgery. Take pain medication only as directed by the treating team.

If a medication causes drowsiness, do not drive or operate heavy machinery.

Pain Management

An antibacterial mouth rinse may be prescribed in some cases. Use it according to the instructions provided.

Always follow the prescribed dosage and do not exceed the recommended amount of any medication.
